You’re in luck because one of our teachers, Thea Sawyer, has written an amazing book “Put Your Back at Ease” and it’s chock full of great visuals and step-by-step instruction on how to improve your posture while relieving your back and body pain.
What should I wear to a back pain solution class?
Comfy shoes, any kind of top and loose-fitting pants (or yoga/stretchy pants) is best—definitely not jeans. Also, consider wearing layers up top. You won’t necessarily get super sweaty, but you may get warm and want to take off a layer or two.
Can I take classes in conjunction with other back treatments?
You bet. We’ll assess your condition and adapt the class to whatever you need.
What results can I expect from a class?
You might feel better in a few minutes, or it may take a few sessions. Many clients are pain-free (or have a reduction in pain) during their first class, but when you go back to the real world, it’s up to you to keep it up and that’s where it gets tricky. Re-learning posture and alignment takes time, patience and practice, just like learning a language or a sport. Don’t expect a quick miracle cure, but do expect one that is sustainable and pain-free.
How long does it take to work?
As mentioned above, many people get pain relief in their first class, along with a more effortless, tall posture. Some of our teachers may require a minimum number of sessions in order to teach the basics and start creating new posture habits. They may even give you a little “homework” to do between sessions. Seem like a lot of work? Well, get the scoop on why this is the typical timeline: Our back pain solution is about re-learning posture—from sitting to sleeping—and making these new, self-sustained habits. Now, at the same time you’re creating these new pain-free habits, you have to unlearn old, painful posture habits, which have been ingrained in you for the past 10, 20, 30 or 40+ years of your life. You’ll realize that it’s “easy” to get into these new postures, but difficult to maintain them on a day-to-day basis unless they are hard-wired in your brain and muscle memory. Therefore, practice, practice, practice is essential. And trust us, as soon as you feel better, you’re going to want to keep that feeling going by attending class and learning more. What types of pain can classes help relieve?
Pretty much every kind. Back pain. Shoulder pain. Neck pain. Knee pain. Foot pain. Pain while sitting through long meetings. Pain while standing in line. Pain while lifting your kids or pushing heavy carts. We focus on retraining every bone, muscle, tendon and nerve in your body to live in alignment and stay pain-free.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. There’s no extreme back cracking or crazy, “I-don’t-bend-like-that” poses in our classes. In fact, it’s really easy on your body probably because we’re just teaching you how to move the way you were born to. Regardless, as with any new physical activity, we recommend that you consult your physician before beginning to work with any of our certified teachers.
Are all of your classes the same?
No! We believe variety is the spice of life. Think of it as a gentle yoga class with different poses taught in different ways in different sequences. Except that instead of mountain pose or triangle, you’re learning everyday-life poses such as sitting, standing, bending and more. Every class has a practical goal, like pain-free sitting for more than ten minutes, standing in line (good practice for the DMV or coffee shop) or bending to pick something up—all without pain. We use helpful photos so you can visually see the difference between painful and pain-free postures, plus music to get you relaxed (and if needed, in the groove), hands-on assistance and more.
What research is this based on?
Our back pain solution is based on the extensive research conducted by ground-breaking posture teacher Noëlle Perez (1925-2019). In the 1950s, Noëlle studied yoga in India with B.K.S. Iyengar and then opened an Iyengar yoga studio in her home city of Paris. While trying to eliminate her own back pain, she flipped medical convention on its head: instead of studying those in pain to see what they did “wrong”, she studied those without pain to see what they did “right”. And voila! Her passion for ethnography, and specifically for ethnophysiology, was born. Over the next 40 years, Noëlle delved deep into populations without pain in Portugal, Africa, South America and Asia, researching their everyday movements and posture. She has published dozens of books and has taught the next generation of posture teachers. Her Aplomb Institute in Paris continues to teach posture classes to this day.
